The day we were into binding books.

It never stops amazing me just how much stuff we create. People don't always take it home or we have no room to store it. Sometimes we put on an exhibition of the work done but this is not always possible. We came up with the idea of making something to store work in that was much easier to store, move about and presented work attractively. We decided to make some large books out of work we had done.

We folded huge sheets of sugar or other thick paper to make the cover and middles. Then we made three holes, one up one central and one down in the spine. Using a strong needle and thick thread we loop from middle to top to bottom to middle and tied it of to form the binding.

We then stuck in work, created the covers and cropped oversize pictures to fit. We were left with a set of manageable and well presented portfolios of our work.

 

 

The day we were inspired by Patrick Caulfield

We looked at the work and life of Patrick Caulfield who painted very bold and brightly coloured images of everyday objects. The colours were flat and they produced a pop art feel, often focusing in on a small detail.

To start with we id small pieces using a pencil sketch, then going over this with permanent marker. We then used chalk pastels to rough out the colours and filled in the areas by going over the chalk with a wet brush. When these had dried we fixed them with spray.

 

 

When we had done this we each selected one image and then painted this up larger in acrylic to make a really bold and strong image.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



The day we kept it in the family.

I had collected together five images of paintings by five artists on the subject of family. We looked as a group at each in turn and discussed them, what they were about, how they had been painted etc. It was a good discussion. As always in a group people interpret things and see things differently. We discussed the WellArt group as being a family and then I set the group the challenge of depicting the group in an image using whatever media they wanted to. The day we were a bit cut ou.

We created some backgrounds using mixed media, some painted, some collaged, some used pastels and some did everything! We then made templates out of figures we found online and used these templates to cut ouyt figures of people and animals. We then placed these over our backgrounds to create some interesting images.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The day we got down to the surfaces.

This was one of those crazy ideas. Lets get lots of scrap metal and assorted junk and randomly glue it down on card and board to create a surface. We did that and they looked good but somehow all the elemnts were not linked together.

 

 

 

In order to tie them together we decided to spray them either black or white. The white made shadows prominant while the black made highlights stand out. Most people went for black!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



The day we pretended to be Uwe Wittwer!

After a visit to the Abbot Hall Gallery exhibition of work by Uwe Wittwer the groups was feeling inspired and keen to recreate his method of working. This time we brought a laptop and projector so we could. Uwe uses the projector to select bits of photo or art work to work from creating a unique almost negative reinterpretation of artworks and images.

We had put together a selection of quirky images to project and group members use these by projecting them onto paper and painting. Some combined two or more images to good effect capturing the spirit of the style of working. We used acrylic, thick and very watery depending.
